Who Was Mikey Debris?

I edited this video, which is part of a series of “viral videos” designed by TIAA-CREF to help raise awareness of basic financial concepts. I think it came out pretty funny. From the TIAA-CREF page:

I Co-Directed and was Lead Editor for the 89 videos (over 5 hours worth) that make up this absolutely amazing app. The developer’s ad copy calls it “the most advanced and comprehensive cooking app for the iPhone and iPod Touch,” and they’re not exaggerating. This thing is incredible, totally worth the five bucks. Click the button below and get it. Note that I receive no commission for sales of this application, I just think it’s great.

As Director:
On set I watched three monitors at once, directing the cameras and making sure we always had proper coverage. I had the additional pleasure of working with Mario Batali, and my co-director, Krista Ruane (who also served as the food stylist and culinary producer), to help ensure Mario’s performance and delivery were up to his usual high standard.

As Lead Editor:

• Developed a Post Production strategy and workflow for the project based on VERY tight budget and time constraints.
• Developed a media management strategy for logging, transcoding, and organizing footage from 3 separate Canon 5D cameras, to be cut by 4 different editors. This was especially tricky because we had to deliver 89 separate video segments.
• Recruited, interviewed, and hired 3 editors to work with me to cut all the segments.
• Supervised the editing process, which took place over 10 days, at the same time as I myself worked through my share of the videos.
• Supervised the process of pulling freeze frames to go with each step of every recipe.
• Watched all final videos to ensure the same standard of quality, as well as cutting style, was present in each.
• Hired and worked with both a Sound Designer and a Colorist to finish all video segments.
• Did final encoding and delivery.

Based on Adam Roberts’ popular food blog, The Amateur Gourmet, this Food Network series followed Adam as he learned how to make popular dishes from high end chefs all over New York City.

I co-wrote, directed, shot, produced, and edited every episode. We made 11 shows, each with a different theme and style. It was great fun, and gave me a chance to try out a bunch of different approaches I might not have done otherwise.

This is our Steak episode, where chef Chris Lim of BLT Steak teaches us how to make the perfect steak.
Three notes about this recipe:
First, it’s delicious and I highly recommend you make it.
Second, DO NOT HEAT YOUR PAN FOR MORE THAN 10 MINUTES, despite what Adam says in the video.
Third, if you do decide to take a crack at it (as many of my friends did), open your windows, turn off your smoke alarm, and close your bedroom doors. Meat cooked at a high temperature gives off a TON of smoke (but it’s worth it)!

I made this book trailer for the cookbook Baked Explorations, available in October 2010.

I came up with the concept, wrote the treatment, found all the cool little miniatures, and produced and directed the shoot. On set I directed Matt & Renato during the interviews, making sure they looked good, and came across the way I knew they wanted to.

The DP Danny Vecchione and I worked together to tell the story of the little fellow with the ball, and to create all the other beauty shots. We shot on the Canon 5D, using mostly prime lenses and one zoom for the rack focus shots. Finally, I edited and delivered the finished video.

I’m very happy with how it came out, and most important, my clients love it so much they put it on the Amazon.com page for the book!

A branded short commissioned by Heineken. Sam has everything in life, including a ponytail that talks to him.

I edited Sam’s Tail from start to finish, taking it all the way through completion.  The post process on this film was rather involved, as we had to deal with a lot of wire removal on the ponytail puppet, which ended up involving several different artists.

Written and directed by Rob Meyer, Sam’s Tail was made for Heineken Premium Light, based on the campaign theme “you never know there’s something better out there until you try” and targeted at a young, aspirational audience.

I edited the video for the Hendrick’s Gin and Milagro Tequila portions of this unique iPhone application, SpiritShelf. The app was developed by William Grant & Sons to “augment the spirits experience.”

More than merely informational, SpiritShelf is a fun iPhone application, which engages in different ways for each William Grant and Sons product that you decide to interact with. SpiritShelf will surprise and impress with many interesting facts, drink recipes, videos and animations for every bottle.

Toy Closet Films is an independent New York based production company founded in 2007 that specializes in creating original content for film, television, and new media.
